Three-way comparison
YPO vs Vistage vs Helm: Which Room for a UK CEO?
These three get compared constantly and they are less alike than the comparison suggests. One is a global peer organisation, one is a coaching programme with a group inside it, and one is a UK founders' club built around a small Forum.

YPO if you are under 45, turn over $16m or more, and need peers in other countries. Vistage if you want a professional Chair, one-to-one coaching and a large group of 12 to 18 leaders, and you may not have founded the business. Helm if you are a founder or CEO of a UK scale-up past £3m and want a Forum of six to eight chaired by someone who has exited, at a published £495 a month. Most UK CEOs will be eligible for one or two of the three, not all of them.
Start with eligibility, because it decides most of this
People compare features first and eligibility last. Do it the other way round, because the criteria remove options before you have chosen anything.
YPO publishes four criteria and requires all of them: under 45, top operational leader with full P&L authority, 50 full-time employees or 15 with $2.75m of annual payroll, and $16m of revenue (or $13m for an agency, or $27m of enterprise value). If you are 46, or at £9m, you are out regardless.
Vistage publishes no hard turnover threshold for its Chief Executive Programme, takes chief executives and business leaders whether or not they founded the company, and runs separate programmes for key executives and emerging leaders. It is the most open door of the three.
Helm requires that you are the founder or CEO of a UK business and that you clear one of three routes: £3m turnover, £3m raised, or a previous exit. Clearing it makes you eligible. What is assessed after that is whether you are past product-market fit, building a team, and willing to say the real numbers out loud to seven other founders. There is no age limit.
What each room actually is
YPO is a global organisation of more than 30,000 members across 142 countries, organised into 14 regions and, within them, local chapters. Its Europe region is described as more than 3,500 chief executives across 84 chapters. The core of membership is the forum, a small confidential group formed from chapter members and run by the members themselves. Founded 1950.
Vistage has been running peer advisory groups since 1957 and describes more than 45,000 members in 35 countries. The UK flagship, the Chief Executive Programme, is a group of 12 to 18 local leaders from non-competing industries, meeting for 12 full days a year, plus 12 one-to-one sessions with a private executive coach who is also the group's Chair. Chairs are paid professionals trained by Vistage.
Helm began in 2003 as The Supper Club and is a private club for founders and CEOs of UK scale-ups, with more than 400 members averaging £21m turnover. The centre is the Forum: six to eight founders matched on stage, sector adjacency and the decisions they face, meeting ten times a year, always chaired by a founder who has already exited. Around it sit 160+ events a year, dinners, member messaging and curated introductions.
The three differences that decide it
Who is in the chair
YPO forums are peer-led, with a member moderating. Vistage puts a paid professional Chair in the room and gives you that person as a coach. Helm's chair is an exited founder, a peer who is further along, and there is no coaching component. Three genuinely different answers to the same question, and which one you want is mostly a matter of what you are missing.
How big the room is
Vistage says 12 to 18. Helm says six to eight. YPO forums vary by chapter. In a session split evenly, eight people in three hours get about 22 minutes each and sixteen get about 11. A bigger room brings more perspectives. A smaller one gets your issue properly worked. Decide which you want.
How far the network reaches
YPO reaches 142 countries and nothing in the UK matches that. Vistage reaches 35. Helm is UK only, and its argument is depth rather than breadth: 400+ members who know the UK hiring, funding and buyer markets in detail. If your business trades internationally, that ranking matters. If it does not, it matters much less than who is in your own room.
YPO for the under-45 founder of a $16m-plus business with international operations or ambitions. Vistage for the leader who wants formal coaching, a big broad group and a full day a month away from the business, including leaders who did not found the company. Helm for the founder or CEO past £3m who wants a small room of peers who own the downside, chaired by someone who has done it, at a price they can see before they call.
Price
Only one of the three publishes it. YPO's membership requirements page says nothing about dues, and third parties describe an initiation fee, global dues and separate chapter dues set locally. Vistage does not publish UK pricing on vistage.co.uk. Helm publishes £495 to join and £495 a month on every page: £6,435 plus VAT in year one and £5,940 a year after, billed monthly with one month's notice.
We are not going to fill the two gaps with third-party numbers. Ask YPO and Vistage for the year-one total in writing, including any joining fee, chapter dues and event costs, before you compare.

YPO from ypo.org/membership-requirements and ypo.org/ypo-regions. Vistage from vistage.co.uk, Chief Executive Programme and About pages. All checked 7 September 2026. Neither YPO nor Vistage publishes dues, so their price rows say so rather than carrying a figure we have assumed.
What all three share
Confidentiality. A no-competitors rule in the small group. A long track record and members who would not leave. Each has been doing this for decades, or in Helm's case two of them, and each has a version of the same core idea: put people who carry the same weight in a room together, regularly, and let them tell each other the truth. If you are choosing between any of them you are choosing between serious options.
Where Helm is wrong for you
If you clear YPO's criteria and your business is international, YPO is the stronger room. If you want a coach as part of the package, Vistage provides one and Helm does not. If you did not found the business and are not its CEO, Helm is not open to you. And if you have not raised £3m, are not turning over £3m and have not exited, you are not eligible yet.
A way to decide in five minutes
Check YPO's four criteria against your business today, in dollars. If you fail one, YPO is off the list and that is most of the decision made. Then ask yourself whether the thing you are missing is a coach or peers. If it is a coach, talk to Vistage and ask for the price in writing. If it is peers who have sat where you sit, and you are a UK founder or CEO past £3m, talk to us. The selection call is 30 minutes and we will tell you honestly whether there is a Forum at your stage with a space in it.
Common questions
What is the difference between YPO, Vistage and Helm?
YPO is a global peer organisation of more than 30,000 members with strict entry criteria including an under-45 age limit and $16m revenue. Vistage is a coaching programme with a peer group of 12 to 18 and a paid professional Chair. Helm is a UK founders' club built around Forums of six to eight, chaired by an exited founder, for founders and CEOs past £3m.
Which of the three is easiest to join?
Vistage, on published criteria. It states no hard turnover threshold for its Chief Executive Programme and takes business leaders who did not found the company. Helm requires founder or CEO status and one of £3m turnover, £3m raised or a previous exit. YPO is the strictest, requiring all four of its criteria including being under 45 and turning over $16m.
Which has the smallest groups?
Helm, at six to eight per Forum. Vistage's own page gives 12 to 18 for the Chief Executive Programme. YPO forum sizes vary by chapter. In an evenly split three-hour session, eight people get around 22 minutes each and sixteen get around 11, so group size directly affects how much of the room's attention your issue gets.
Which one includes coaching?
Vistage. Its Chief Executive Programme includes 12 one-to-one sessions a year with a private executive coach who is also the group's Chair. YPO forums are peer-led and Helm Forums are chaired by an exited founder, and neither includes formal one-to-one coaching. If a coach is what you are missing, Vistage is built for that.
Which publishes its price?
Only Helm: £495 to join, then £495 a month, billed monthly with one month's notice. YPO's membership requirements page says nothing about dues, and third parties describe global dues plus separate chapter dues. Vistage does not publish UK pricing on vistage.co.uk. Ask both for the year-one total in writing before comparing.
Can I be in more than one?
There is no exclusivity rule we are aware of at any of the three, and some founders belong to two. The real constraint is time. Two small groups meeting monthly or ten times a year, plus two events programmes, is more than most founders running a scaling business can protect. Be honest about which one would get the diary.
Key Takeaways
- Check eligibility first. YPO's four criteria, including under 45 and $16m revenue, remove it for most UK CEOs before features matter.
- YPO is a global peer organisation, Vistage is a coaching programme with a group inside it, and Helm is a UK founders' club built around a small Forum.
- Who chairs differs: YPO is peer-led, Vistage uses a paid professional Chair, Helm uses a founder who has exited.
- Group size differs: Vistage 12 to 18, Helm six to eight, YPO varies by chapter. Size sets how much airtime you get.
- Vistage is the only one of the three with formal one-to-one coaching built in.
- YPO's reach across 142 countries is unmatched and is the reason to choose it if your business is international.
- Only Helm publishes its price: £495 to join then £495 a month, billed monthly.
- Decide what you are missing, a coach or peers, and the choice between the three mostly makes itself.
