Scaling a business, from founders who have.
Growth breaks things: the systems you built at ten people, the way you sell, even your own job. The founders who scale well usually saw it coming, because someone told them what breaks next.
These guides come from Helm members who have grown businesses past £3m, £10m and £50m, on sales, strategy, culture, systems and stepping up from founder to CEO.
Questions founders ask. Scaling a business: the short answers
What breaks first when a business scales?
Usually communication and the founder's own diary. Decisions that used to happen in one room start to stall, and the founder becomes the bottleneck. Putting in a management team, regular rhythms and clear ownership early helps most.
When should a founder step back from running the business day to day?
When the business needs a CEO more than a founder: someone building the team and the system rather than doing the work. Many Helm members make that shift between £5m and £20m revenue.
How do other founders scale without losing the culture?
By writing down what matters while the team is small, hiring for it, and making leaders responsible for it as layers are added. Our culture guides share what has worked for members.
